    Grid simulation services for the medical community

    The first part of this paper presents a selection of medical simulation applications, including image reconstruction, near real-time registration for neuro-surgery, enhanced dose distribution calculation for radio-therapy, inhaled drug delivery prediction, plastic surgery planning and cardio-vascular system simulation. The latter two topics are discussed in some detail. In the second part, we show how such services can be made available to the clinical practitioner using Grid technology. We discuss the developments and experience made during the EU project GEMSS, which provides reliable, efficient, secure and lawful medical Grid services

    Use of a Novel Oleaginous Microorganism As a Potential Source of Lipids For Weanling Pigs

    Weanling pigs are at risk of succumbing to illness due to an immature immune system and insufficient supply of available energy at the time of weaning. This study was aimed at determining whether oleaginous bacteria could serve as a source of lipids to weanling pigs. Weanling pigs were provided a daily dose of 1×109 colony fomring unit (CFU) = kg−1 of the novel oleaginous Enterobacter cloacae strain JD6301 or JD8715 (which is a variant form of JD6301 capable of producing extracellular triglycerides) via oral gavage for 5 d. Serum was collected every 6 h and intestinal samples were collected at 6 d. Providing pigs with JD6301 or JD8715 significantly increased serum concentrations of triglycerides and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) within 72 h. Additionally, the JD6301 and JD8715 strains were able to survive within the gastrointestinal tract throughout the duration of the study. These results suggest that providing Enterobacter cloacae can increase the serum lipids in the pigs, thus potentially providing an additional source of energy to animals during times of stress. This could potentially help improve the metabolic response of animals during times of stress

    Dengue: achados de biópsia muscular em 15 pacientes

    Dengue is known to produce a syndrome involving muscles, tendons and joints. The hallmark of this syndrome is severe myalgia but includes fever, cutaneous rash, and headache. The neuromuscular aspects of this infection are outlined only in isolated reports, and the muscle histopathological features during myalgia have not been described. In order to ascertain the actual neuromuscular involvement in dengue and better comprehend the histological nature of myalgia, we performed a clinical and neurological evaluation, a serum CPK level and a muscle biopsy (with histochemistry) in 15 patients (4 males), median age 23 years (range 14-47) with classic dengue fever, serologically confirmed, during the bra-zilian dengue epidemics from September 1986 to March 1987. All patients had a history of fever, headache and severe myalgia. Upon examination 4 had a cutaneous rash, 3 had fever, and 3 a small hepatomegaly. The neurological examination was unremarkable in all and included a manual muscle test. CPK was mildly elevated in only 3 patients. Muscle biopsy revealed a light to moderate perivascular mononuclear infiltrate in 12 patients and lipid accumulation in 11. Mild mitochondrial proliferation was seen in 3, few central nuclei in 3, rare foci of myonecrosis in 3, and 2 patients had type grouping. Dengue in our patients, produced myalgia but no detectable muscle weakness or other neuromuscular involvement. The main histopathological correlation with myalgia seems to be a perivascular mononuclear infiltrate and lipid accumulation.A síndrome clínica produzida pelo vírus da dengue, inclui febre, exantema, cefaléia e especialmente mialgia. Entretanto, as possiveis alterações morfológicas do músculo esquelético, eventualmente relacionadas com a mialgia, ainda não haviam sido estudadas em seres humanos com dengue. Nosso objetivo foi estudar o substrato, anatomopatológico da mialgia nesses pacientes. Foram avaliados 15 pacientes com diagnóstico de dengue, forma clássica, com idades variando de 14 a 47 anos (mediana de 23 anos), sendo 4 do sexo masculino e 11 do sexo feminino, através de exame clínico e neurológico, exames laboratoriais e biópsia muscular com histoquímica, durante a epidemia de dengue em Alagoas, em 1987. Todos os pacientes apresentavam história de cefaléia, febre e mialgia intensa, sem fraqueza muscular. Ao exame clínico observou-se exantema em 4 pacientes, febre em 3 e discreta hepatomegalia em 3. O exame neurológico foi normal em todos e a enzima CK sérica estava pouco elevada em 3 pacientes. A biópsia muscular revelou discreto infiltrado inflamatório mononuclear perivascular em 12 pacientes, acúmulo lipídico em 11, predominância de fibras do tipo I em 6, raros focos de necrose em 3, proliferação mitocondrial em 3, centralização nuclear em 3 e type grouping em 2.     An accurate record of volcanic ash fall deposition as characterized by dispersed organic matter in a Lower Permian tonstein bed (Faxinal Coalfield, Paraná Basin, Brazil)

    For the first time, the dispersed organic matter in the tonstein layer interbedded with a coal seam in the Faxinal Coalfield (Sakmarian, Southern Paraná Basin, Brazil) is characterized. The deposition of clusters of pollen grains was highly influenced by the intense ash fall process that probably occurred during seasonal dehiscence of reproductive structures. The well-preserved phytoclasts with their upper and lower leaf cuticles stuck together indicate that the rapid fall of ash on this material hindered organic biodegradation. The preservation of seemingly autochthonous Botryococcus colonies at the top of the tonstein layer is evidence of the subaqueous deposition of this layer. The darkening in cuticles and xylem phytoclasts can be attributed to different causes: the thermal influence of ash fall during deposition, chemical effects of the ash, prolonged oxidation of organic matter in low water level conditions or the burning of plant organs by wildfires. Analyses of dispersed organic matter along the tonstein layer showed that the organic matter succession reflects the composition of different plant strata (herbaceous pteridophytes and arboreal glossopterids-cordaitaleans) around the deposition site

    Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy in MgB 2

    We present extensive Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STM/S) measurements at low temperatures in the multiband superconductor MgB2_2. We find a similar behavior in single crystalline samples and in single grains, which clearly shows the partial superconducting density of states of both the π\pi and σ\sigma bands of this material. The superconducting gaps corresponding to both bands are not single valued. Instead, we find a distribution of superconducting gaps centered around 1.9mV and 7.5mV, corresponding respectively to each set of bands. Interband scattering effects, leading to a single gap structure at 4mV and a smaller critical temperature can be observed in some locations on the surface. S-S junctions formed by pieces of MgB2_2 attached to the tip clearly show the subharmonic gap structure associated with this type of junctions. We discuss future developments and possible new effects associated with the multiband nature of superconductivity in this compound.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Physica

    Microtubule cross-linking triggers the directional motility of kinesin-5

    Although assembly of the mitotic spindle is known to be a precisely controlled process, regulation of the key motor proteins involved remains poorly understood. In eukaryotes, homotetrameric kinesin-5 motors are required for bipolar spindle formation. Eg5, the vertebrate kinesin-5, has two modes of motion: an adenosine triphosphate (ATP)–dependent directional mode and a diffusive mode that does not require ATP hydrolysis. We use single-molecule experiments to examine how the switching between these modes is controlled. We find that Eg5 diffuses along individual microtubules without detectable directional bias at close to physiological ionic strength. Eg5's motility becomes directional when bound between two microtubules. Such activation through binding cargo, which, for Eg5, is a second microtubule, is analogous to known mechanisms for other kinesins. In the spindle, this might allow Eg5 to diffuse on single microtubules without hydrolyzing ATP until the motor is activated by binding to another microtubule. This mechanism would increase energy and filament cross-linking efficiency
